State Government Affairs Conference

01/29/2018

Madison, WI – On Wednesday, January 24th over 200 Credit Union representatives visited the capitol for the annual Government Affairs Conference. Fort Community Credit Union sent six team members to meet with state leaders to advocate on behalf of credit unions; Meghan Bernath, Danielle Frawley, Bryan Gatlin, Josh Kline, Robyn Newcomb, and Marissa Weidenfeller.

For years credit unions have been passionate about financial literacy by providing financial resources and paying for financial curriculum for local teachers. There is a difference between donating money and donating time. In 2017, FCCU spent over 240 hours teaching financial literacy in the classrooms of local schools.

It is extremely important for credit union representatives to show state leaders the positive impact credit unions are making in their member’s lives, and their communities.

“As a not for profit financial cooperative, it is vital for FCCU to participate in political advocacy efforts on behalf of not only our 19,000 members, but also the 2.5 million credit union members state-wide. By promoting credit union-friendly legislation we not only protect credit union members, but also draw awareness to the positive economic impact that credit unions have on Wisconsin. In 2017 alone, Wisconsin credit unions saved their members over $240 million though lower rates on loans, higher rates on deposits and lower fees. This has a significant impact on our local economies and regulators, legislators, and other community leaders need to be aware of the credit union difference,” stated Danielle Frawley, Vice-President of Lending at FCCU.

“Attending the Government Affairs Conference was truly impactful. Financial illiteracy has raised concern among government agencies and leaders in the community, expanding to business sectors. It is an issue unique to any population. It affects everyone: both young and old. We stand to make our credit union voice heard. FCCU is listening and actively seeking to provide ways to ensure the financial future of our members and communities,” added Bryan Gatlin, Vice-President of Member Experience.

Wisconsin is home to credit union international and national trade associations such as CUNA, CUNA Mutual, National Credit Union Foundation and Filene Research Institute. FCCU team members met with Senator Fitzgerald, Representative Horlacher, Representative Jagler, Senator Nass, Senator Ringhand, and Representative Vruwink.
